# Wait / Delay Node

> Pause workflow execution using fixed durations, dynamic expressions, jitter variance, and rate-limit buffers.

The **Wait / Delay Node** (`component-wait`) pauses workflow execution between steps. It is designed to handle asynchronous settlement delays, rate-limit spacing, third-party webhook arrival windows, and external system consistency buffers.

    B --> C["GET /transfers/{id}/status"]
```
## 1. Operating Modes
### Fixed Duration
Pauses execution for an exact configured duration:
* Supported units: `Milliseconds`, `Seconds`, `Minutes`, `Hours`.
* Example: Wait `3000 ms` to allow background ledger settlement before checking transaction status.
### Dynamic Duration Expression
Derives the wait duration dynamically from upstream node responses or variables:
```handlebars theme={null}
{{ResponseBinding.InitJob.body.retryAfterSeconds}}
```
* **Fallback Duration**: Configurable fallback value if the dynamic token evaluates to null or empty.
### Jitter Variance
Introduces random variance to prevent "thundering herd" problems when running parallel stress flows:
* **Base Duration**: `5000 ms`
* **Jitter Percentage**: `20%` (delays randomly between `4000 ms` and `6000 ms`).
## 2. Configuration Properties
| Property | Type | Description |
| :- | :- | :- |
| **Duration** | `number` | The numerical duration value. |
| **Unit** | `string` | `milliseconds`, `seconds`, `minutes`, `hours`. |
| **Mode** | `string` | `fixed` or `dynamic`. |
| **Expression** | `string` | Optional dynamic binding expression. |
| **FallbackDuration** | `number` | Default duration if expression resolution yields null. |
| **Description** | `string` | Annotation displayed directly on the visual node badge. |
## 3. Enterprise Use Cases
* **Settlement & Clearing Buffers**: Introducing a brief 3-second buffer after dispatching an instant payment transfer before querying ledger settlement state.
* **Rate-Limit Throttling**: Placing a 250ms delay inside batch loops to stay strictly within third-party API rate limits.
* **Asynchronous Provisioning**: Giving cloud microservices adequate spin-up time before executing downstream integration assertions.
